The Grand Finale of the Cassava Industry Mentorship Class
As we wrapped up the final week of the Cassava Industry Mentorship Class, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared. It has been such a pleasure guiding each of you through this program, and I am proud of the commitment and passion you’ve shown in learning about the vast opportunities within the cassava value chain. This last session was packed with valuable insights to prepare you for the global market, and I’m excited to recap some of the key highlights for you.
Adding Value to Cassava: Opportunities for Growth
We began the session by exploring the many ways to add value to cassava. From starch and flour to noodles, cassava chips, and even garri, the possibilities are endless. Each of these products offers unique market opportunities, whether for local sales or international export. For instance, starch is highly sought after by industrial buyers, while cassava chips and noodles are becoming increasingly popular with consumers looking for healthier options. By diversifying your offerings, you can maximize profitability and position yourself as a key player in this growing industry.
Branding and Packaging: The Gateway to Global Markets
One of the most important aspects of building a successful business is establishing a strong brand identity. Your logo, color scheme, typography, and tone are not just design elements—they are the face of your business. They help your products stand out in the market and build trust with your customers.
Packaging plays an equally critical role. It’s not just about aesthetics but also compliance with international standards. From biodegradable materials to clear labeling that highlights certifications like “gluten-free” and nutritional facts, these details matter. Proper packaging can open doors to markets in the U.S., Europe, and beyond, where regulations are stringent but the rewards are worth it.
Certifications and Documentation: A Must for Export Success
We took a deep dive into the certifications and documents you need to export legally and successfully. Certifications such as NAFDAC, NEPC, and phytosanitary certificates are non-negotiable for building credibility and accessing global markets. Equally important are documents like the NXP form (mandatory for Nigerian exporters), proforma invoices, commercial invoices, and certificates of origin. These documents ensure your goods are cleared for export and help build trust with international buyers.
Remember, exporting under the table may seem like a shortcut, but it comes with significant risks. Beyond the legal implications, unregistered exports mean your efforts won’t be recognized by the government, and you’ll miss out on valuable support, including funding and incentives. Let’s strive to do things the right way—it’s a win-win for both your business and the industry at large.
The Benefits of Exporting Cassava Products
Exporting doesn’t just grow your business—it’s a game-changer. It gives you access to international markets, boosts your profits, and generates foreign currency earnings. More importantly, it positions your business as a trusted international player and contributes to Nigeria’s economic growth by increasing foreign reserves and supporting GDP growth.
During the session, we also discussed funding opportunities through programs like NEXIM. These funds can help you scale your operations, whether you need working capital or project financing. The Export Credit Certificate (ECC) program is another great incentive, offering tax breaks and financial rewards for exporting fully processed products.
A Final Word of Encouragement
As we concluded this Cassava Industry Mentorship Class, I urged all participants to take what they’ve learned and apply it boldly. The cassava industry is full of potential, but success requires effort, strategy, and a commitment to excellence. I have no doubt that each of you has what it takes to thrive.

It was a wonderful session even though I missed one and two, but there was a recap by madam Yemisi which really helped.
I appreciate you, ma for your efforts at leading people on the path of success and not hiding or holding back. God bless you. You’re one of a kind and a leader indeed.
